Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a lentivirus that causes AIDS when not treated. HIV/AIDS is a major global concern due to due to cost, health burden, and deaths attributed to it. Globally, 35 million people are estimated to be living with HIV of which 1.1M are Americans as women form m25% of those infected. Annually, up to 50,000 new diagnoses are recorded in the USA with a prevalence rate of 0.23% (Hiers, 2020). an estimated $20 billion is spent by the USA government for the prevention and care of HIV patients. Treating and preventing HIV is faced with major threats such as increasing intravenous drug users, increased stigma related to the disease, poor education about safe sex, lack of access to testing kits, preventive measures, and incases to care, and lack of awareness about HIV (HIV Basics, 2021). Though there is no cure, there is hope to reduce infection rates if basis prevention strategies are put in place. Those preventive measures should be encouraged in those who are at increased risk of contracting and spreading the disease including gay men, intravenous drug users, and commercial sex workers. |
